Science Fair Night: Kindergarten Sink or Float?

Kindergarten presented the science of sink or float at our annual science fair night last Thursday!  Each student presented during their 20 minute shift at our table.  We demonstrated why some objects are buoyant and why some are dense by dropping objects into a bucket of water to see what they would do?  We even had a drawing for anyone who visited our table and did our experiment!  Three lucky Saint Patrick School students won a pool float!

Not only were kindergarten students presenting their knowledge of science, they were also working on their public speaking/social skills by interacting with guests visiting our table!

Science Lesson: Guinea Pig Life Cycle and Observation

In kindergarten, EVERYTHING is hands-on!  We invited the second graders to join us at the end of the day to learn more about guinea pigs!  Our class pets, Jupiter and Fizzy, were good sports.  Not only did we learn a little more about guinea pigs, but we also learned more about what it means to own a pet.  My students help me do everything, from holding them to cleaning their house, to giving them their vitamins each day.  We know that having a pet is a huge responsibility and it takes patience and empathy.

Broadway Stars!

We had so much fun performing “Getting to Know You” from the broadway classic, The King and I at our all-school talent show on Friday!  We have so much talent in our school with a wide-variety of acts, it was a fun hour of entertainment!  Way to go kindergarten!

Our New Class Pets!

Meet our new adorable furry friends!  Jupiter Red Samoa (all dark brown) and Fizzy Fuzzbert Chips Ahoy (mixed browns) are the two guinea pigs who have stolen our hearts!  My kindergarten students love cuddling and holding them on their blanket.  Each school day the student pet caretaker will check Jupiter and Fizzy’s food and water supply and will also give them their vitamins.  Guinea pigs do not produce enough Vitamin C on their own, so we give them a supplement.   Having a class pet teach responsibility and the importance of team work.  It also teaches empathy and developing social skills.

Matter, Matters!

Ever wonder what matter is?  Matter is the stuff that makes up everything!  In science this week we demonstrated how matter can change with play dough.  The dough started as a solid cylinder shape and ended up a different creation of each student’s choice!

It’s All About Peep Experiments!

We spent the afternoon doing six experiments with a traditional Easter treat, Peeps!  After each experiment, my students had to log in their Peep journals what happened.  Some of the experiments required a hypothesis prior to testing the results.  I think they found the results quite exciting and tasty!

#1- Taste Testing Pink and Yellow Peep Bunnies- Which one tastes better?

#2- What happens when you put a pink and yellow peep together in a cup with water?

#3- Sink or Float?

#4- What happens when you put a Peep in lemon-lime soda?

#5- Mystery baggie- what happens when you put a peep in a baggie with vinegar and baking soda?

#6- Microwave test- what happens when you put a Peep in the microwave for 30 seconds?
